Before you open the box
IKEA usually doesn’t include plugs or screws for the ceiling. The instructions say so: the fixings depend on the surface. A concrete slab needs one kind, plasterboard another. In prefab blocks with hollow-core slabs, the drill can suddenly punch into a void where an ordinary plug won’t grip.
Weight is the next question. A light paper shade will hang from almost anything. A multi-arm fitting or one with glass shades needs a hook or a mounting bar screwed into something solid, not just plasterboard.
Some IKEA lights belong to the TRÅDFRI smart lighting range. Then the job also includes pairing with a remote or a gateway, so mention it in the order and the tradesperson knows what’s coming.
Older buildings often have no earth wire, and some still have aluminium wiring. A metal lamp with no earth is a question for an electrician, not for the leaflet.

IKEA light fitting installation: common mistakes
- Whatever plugs were in the drawer, driven into plasterboard. A few weeks later the lamp starts to tilt.
- Connecting without checking which wire is live. If the switch breaks the neutral, the lamp holder stays live even with the light off.
- A two-circuit chandelier on a single switch. It works, but every bulb comes on at once.
- Twisted wires under tape instead of proper connectors. Fine until something warms up.
IKEA light fitting installation: getting ready
- Check in the instructions whether the lamp goes on a hook or a plate, and that nothing is missing.
- Buy bulbs if the box has none. IKEA often sells them separately.
- Clear space under the fitting for a ladder.
- Take a photo of the wires in the ceiling and of the wall switch.
Booking it in the app
Describe the lamp in the app, roughly how heavy it is and what the ceiling is made of, and add the photos. Electricians who take this kind of job in Warsaw send offers with their own price. The profile shows whether their electrical permits have been checked against the register.
You compare price, rating and reviews, then pick one. Phone number and exact address are shared only after you choose, and you pay the tradesperson directly. The invoice comes from him.
Plugs and screws are usually in the price of the work. The lamp, bulbs, extra connectors and taking the boxes away are paid separately. Whoever fitted the lamp answers for the fitting and redoes it if needed. A crumbling ceiling slab or old wiring inside the wall is not on him.
Before any electrical work, switch off the circuit breaker and confirm there’s no voltage with a tester. The light switch alone isn’t enough.
