Built-in LEDs change the rules
Many Philips ceiling lights have the LEDs fixed in place, with the driver hidden inside the housing. There’s no bulb to swap, and if the module fails you can’t always buy it on its own. So the connection has to be right from day one: a loose terminal or an overheating driver shortens the life of the whole fitting.
Dimmers are a separate issue. An old dimmer made for filament bulbs and an LED fitting often don’t get along: the light flickers, hums or never fully goes out. If there’s a dimmer on the wall, check the product description to see whether the light can be dimmed at all, and with what kind of dimmer.
Philips Hue lights are controlled from an app or a remote. The wall switch then has to stay on, and pairing becomes part of the job. Put that in the order from the start.

What tends to go wrong
Usually it isn’t the lamp that causes trouble. It’s whatever the previous owner left on the ceiling.
- The old dimmer stays because “it worked fine”. With LEDs, the flicker starts.
- A metal fitting with no earth wire. Very common in older buildings.
- A shallow ceiling box, so the driver doesn’t fit under the canopy and the wires get squashed.
- Connecting without finding the live wire. The light is off, but the terminals are still live.
Philips light installation: getting ready
- Take the shade off the old fitting and photograph the wires and the switch.
- Find the breaker in the fuse box that cuts power to that room.
- Keep the instructions and product description handy, especially the part about dimming.
- Decide what happens to the old fitting: you keep it, or it goes out with the rubbish.
Finding an electrician
Two steps are enough. First you describe the job in the app: which light, what’s hanging there now, whether there’s a dimmer, plus photos. Then offers arrive from tradespeople who do this work in Warsaw, each with their own price.
You choose by price, rating and reviews. The profile shows whether their electrical permits have been checked. Contact details and the address unlock after you choose. You pay the electrician directly and get the invoice from him.
Small fixings are usually included. The lamp itself, a new dimmer or ceiling box, and removing the old fitting are charged separately. The electrician answers for his own fitting and redoes it if needed. The state of old wiring inside the walls is not on him.
Don’t connect the light with just the switch off: turn off the breaker and check there’s no voltage with a tester.
