Layout before the hole saw
Start with spacing. Downlights go in straight rows, at an even distance from the walls and from each other, while avoiding the metal frame behind the board. A tradesperson usually finds the studs first and only then marks up. One hole that lands on a stud can shift the whole row.
The cut-out diameter is printed on the box or in the instructions. Don’t guess it from the size of the light: a small hole can be widened, an oversized one can’t be fixed, because the spring clips have nothing to grip.
Check the depth too. The void between board and slab has to take the light plus its driver or junction box. With a shallow drop, not every model fits.
Stretch ceilings work in a different order: the mounting rings for downlights go in before the membrane is stretched. After that, it’s a job for the ceiling installers.

Philips: replaceable bulb or built-in LED
Philips makes both fittings for replaceable GU10 bulbs and downlights with integrated LEDs. The first kind is easy to fix, you swap the bulb. With the second, a fault usually means replacing the whole fitting, so it matters that the driver isn’t pressed into insulation and can shed heat.
Philips Hue downlights are controlled from an app. The wall switch then stays on permanently, and pairing becomes part of the job.
Mistakes you look at for years
- A row a few centimetres off the wall or window line. You won’t see it by day. In the evening you’ll see nothing else.
- Drivers buried in mineral wool. They overheat and the lights die one after another.
- Ordinary fittings above a shower, without the right IP rating.
- Downlights on an old dimmer meant for filament bulbs. Result: flicker.
- Every light daisy-chained with no junction box and wires joined any old way above the ceiling. Nobody will ever find the break.
What to prepare
- A sketch or photo of the ceiling marking where you want light.
- All fittings and bulbs, plus a couple of spares.
- Where the supply cable runs and which switch should control the lights.

Downlights are connected with the breaker off, after a tester confirms there’s no voltage in the wires.
