What an Osram downlight job is really about

The fitting decides where the light goes. The bulb decides what it’s like. That’s where people slip up, because the box has several figures that are easy to skip past.

• Colour temperature in kelvin. Warm for living rooms and bedrooms, neutral for kitchens and bathrooms. All bulbs in one room should match.
• Beam angle. A narrow beam paints spots on the wall, a wide one spreads light evenly. In a low room with widely spaced lights, a narrow beam leaves a striped floor.
• Dimming. If there’s a dimmer on the wall, the bulb box has to say it’s dimmable.

Second, length. An LED bulb can be longer than the halogen it replaces and won’t fit a shallow fitting, or sticks out below the ring. Measure the old bulb before buying.

Third, old transformers. If the lights used to run on 12 V, there are transformers above the ceiling that new 230 V bulbs don’t need. They come out, and that means getting at every light.

If there’s also an LED strip planned for a ceiling recess, it needs its own driver. Hide it somewhere you can still reach later: strip drivers fail more often than the LEDs themselves.

What it costs and how to book: light fitting in Warsaw.

The usual slip-ups

• Bulbs from different boxes. Each light glows a slightly different colour.
• A bulb not marked dimmable on a dimmer circuit. It blinks or hums.
• An old 12 V halogen transformer left in place, although the new bulbs run on 230 V.
• Bathroom downlights with no IP rating, because “it’s only a bulb”.

Before fitting

• Check which holders are in the ceiling: GU10 or older 12 V ones.
• Buy bulbs from one range, plus a few spares.
• Photograph the ceiling, one light pulled out, and the switch.

Booking step by step

1. In the app, describe the ceiling, the number of lights and whether it’s new holes or replacing old ones. Add photos.
2. Offers come from tradespeople in Warsaw. Each names his own price and date.
3. You choose by price, rating and reviews. The profile shows whether his electrical permits are verified.
4. After you choose, he gets your number and address. You pay him directly, and he issues the invoice.

Fittings and bulbs are yours to buy, and cable and removing old transformers are also paid separately. The electrician answers for his own installation and redoes it if needed. The ceiling itself and old wiring in the slab are not on him.

Bulbs can be changed with the light off, but for any work on the wires, switch off the breaker and check with a tester that there’s no voltage.
