A fan pulls air out, so it should sit away from the door the air comes in through, and as high as possible, near the source of steam. In practice, the ventilation duct usually decides: the fan goes where the inlet to the shaft is. If the duct is in a different corner from the shower, using the existing inlet still beats running a pipe across half the bathroom.
The zones around a bath and shower have their own rules on sealing and power supply. A fan directly above the bath needs the right IP rating, and often a safety extra-low-voltage supply. If it’s going in a zone, check the model’s description to see whether it’s suitable.
Air coming in matters as much as air going out. A bathroom door with a gap underneath or a grille does half the work.

Airflow and noise
A fan’s airflow is given in cubic metres per hour. It’s matched to the volume of the bathroom, not chosen on “more is better”. An oversized fan in a small bathroom with a narrow duct mostly makes noise.
Cata has basic models and versions with a timer or humidity sensor. The latter need a permanent live feed as well as the wire from the light switch, which usually means three wires at the fan. If they’re not there, a cable has to be run, and that’s worth mentioning in the order.
