Bisazza glass mosaic in practice
Bisazza is an Italian brand known for glass mosaic. The small tiles come glued into sheets, either on mesh at the back or on paper at the front, and each sheet goes onto the wall in one piece. Mesh-backed sheets sit straight into the adhesive. Face paper gets soaked and peeled off once the adhesive has set.
Glass is translucent, so glass mosaic is normally fixed with white adhesive. Grey shows through and makes the colour look dirty. The adhesive is spread thin and even with a fine-notched trowel so it does not squeeze up into the joints.
The wall has to be flat as a table. Under a large tile a small dip disappears; under mosaic, every ripple shows in the reflected light. In a shower area, the mosaic also needs waterproofing beneath it, because there are so many joints for water to find.
Most of the time goes not into whole sheets but into the edges. Around taps, sockets and corners, sheets are cut apart and single tiles are trimmed with glass nippers. That is where skill shows: neat cuts and joints as wide as the ones mid-wall.

Where mosaic tends to go wrong
- Grey adhesive under pale glass. The mosaic darkens and turns patchy.
- Too much adhesive. It oozes between the tiles and sets as lumps in the joints.
- Sheets placed by eye. Wider gaps and stepped rows show where sheets meet.
- Grout washed off too late. A milky haze stays on the glass and is hard to remove without scratching.
- No waterproofing by the shower. Water gets through the joints into the wall.
Before the tiler starts
- Buy mosaic from one batch, with extra for cuts.
- Choose the grout colour in advance.
- Photograph the wall close up: cracks, old tiles, pipe outlets.
- If old tiles have to come off, add that to the job.
For bathroom work, the water gets shut off first, and near sockets the circuit is switched off at the fuse box. Water and electricity in one room call for care.
