How venetians work on a sloping window

Fakro makes roof windows and the accessories for them: roller and blackout blinds, venetians, external shutters and awning blinds. A venetian for a roof window isn’t the same as one for an ordinary window. On a slope the slats would just sag, so they run in side channels or on tensioned wires. You tilt them with a rod or handle, and some models have a motor.

Aluminium slats don’t mind moisture and are easy to wipe, so venetians often end up in bathrooms and kitchens under the roof.

The model is chosen from the data plate on the window frame, which gives type and size. That decides whether the channels will sit on the sash. Get the size wrong and there’s a gap between slats and frame for the light to come through.

Common mistakes

• The blind was bought by glass size, so the channels don’t line up with the fixings on the sash.
• Slats left unadjusted. Half close, half don’t.
• Wires or channels tensioned unevenly, so the blind skews when the sash is rotated.
• Brackets screwed into old holes, and a month later the whole thing wobbles.

Getting ready

• Photograph the data plate on the window frame.
• Decide whether every window needs a blind or only the ones where the sun is a problem.
• Check the box has all the channels and fixings.
• Clear the desk and the space under the window.

For motorised models, the mains connection is done by someone qualified in electrical work, with the circuit off.

Venetians on a roof window take a different kind of strain. The sash gets rotated for airing and cleaning, and the blind has to cope with that. So after fitting, a good fitter tests it with the window in every position, not only closed.

You settle up with the fitter directly and the invoice comes from him. He redoes his own fitting if the blind runs crooked. The condition of the window is not on him. The blinds and taking away packaging are paid separately, fixings are usually included.
