What to know about Grandeco

Grandeco is a Belgian wallpaper maker. Its collections include botanical and geometric designs and material effects, mostly on non-woven backing. With non-woven, the paste goes on the wall and the dry strip is pressed onto it from the top. Handy, but the surface has to be flat and primed.

Usual slip-ups

• Hanging over flaking paint. The paper grips the paint, the paint lets go of the wall, and the lot comes off together.
• Smoothing bubbles too late. Air gets pushed out with a smoothing tool from the middle outwards right away, before the paste grabs.
• Paste left on the face. Marks on non-woven can stay for good, so they are wiped off at once with a damp sponge.
• No spare roll. One ruined drop without a matching batch means hunting through shops.

Ahead of the visit

• Choose the wall and decide where the centre of the pattern should fall.
• Take down pictures, shelves and wall lights.
• Buy the paste named on the label if the tradesperson is not bringing their own.
• Photograph the wall close up and from across the room.

If the wall has sockets or switches, that circuit gets switched off at the fuse box before the plates come off. With wet paste around, that is a safety step, not a nicety.
