What matters with a Häcker kitchen

Häcker sells kitchens in two main lines, Systemat and ClassicArt, and both arrive as finished carcasses built to the plan. There’s very little cutting on site. The fitter’s job is different: get everything level, line up the gaps between fronts and fix the units so they carry a full load of plates for years.

Hinges and drawer runners adjust in several directions. Handy, but adjustment won’t fix a carcass that hangs out of true. You can tweak the door, and six months later it drifts again.

Then there are the built-in appliances. The oven, dishwasher and fridge openings are sized for the models in the plan. If you bought something else, check its fitting dimensions before assembly starts, not on the day.

Where kitchen fitting goes wrong

• The base row goes in without a level. The worktop then sits with a gap and water runs to one side.
• Wall units are fixed into plasterboard with ordinary plugs. Light walls need proper cavity anchors or a timber batten behind the board, or a cupboard full of plates slowly pulls away.
• Nobody adjusts the fronts after loading. Units settle a little under the weight, so the gaps get set again once the kitchen is in use.
• Sink and hob cut-outs are marked by eye. A wrong cut in a worktop can’t be undone, you order a new one.
• Appliances get hooked up by whoever is around. Water, power and above all gas need someone qualified for that work.

One safety line: a gas hob is connected only by a certified gas fitter, and the sockets for the oven and induction hob get checked before installation, not after.

Before the fitter arrives

• Keep the kitchen plan from the showroom handy. It shows the assembly order and the appliance openings.
• Check that every box is there and undamaged before the packaging goes out.
• Clear the kitchen and the route to it. Stack the boxes in the next room.
• Have the water, drain and electrical points where the plan puts them.
