What HG drain cleaner can and can’t do
HG sells drain unblockers that dissolve organic stuff: hair, soap residue, grease sitting in the trap. If a drain has been slowing down gradually, a product like that is often enough, especially if you use it now and then before a proper plug forms.
Some blockages no chemical will touch, though. A bit of plastic, a cotton bud, building rubble after a renovation, scale packed into an old pipe. If the water doesn’t drain at all, the cleaner just sits in the trap and never reaches the obstruction. That’s a job for a drain snake or for taking the trap apart.
How do you know a bottle won’t do it? Water comes up in more than one place, say in the bath when you flush the toilet. Or the blockage comes back every few weeks even though you clean regularly. That usually means the problem is further down the pipe, not in the trap.
Rather hand the job over? More here: drain unblocking in Warsaw.
Things not to do
- Don’t mix drain products. After one, don’t pour in another: the reaction can give off caustic fumes.
- Don’t pour chemicals into a drain full of standing water. Diluted cleaner won’t dissolve anything, and it’ll run over your hands when the trap comes off.
- Don’t force the blockage through with wire. Old pipe joints crack easily.
- Don’t ignore a blockage that keeps coming back. Each quick fix just pushes the real cause further down the road.
While you wait for the plumber
- Photograph the label of whatever you’ve already poured in. The plumber needs to know what he’s dealing with.
- Clear out the cabinet under the sink or open the access panel by the bath.
- Have a bowl and some rags ready: a little water always escapes when the trap comes apart.
- Check whether it’s one drain or several.
Drain chemicals are corrosive: gloves, glasses and an open window, and don’t lean over the drain after using them.
