Kitchen design: layout, appliances, sockets

A kitchen in a block of flats: the window off to one side, the radiator exactly where you want the sink, and a gas pipe running across half the wall. The units looked great in the showroom, but someone has to tell you whether the dishwasher fits next to the sink and whether the oven door opens without hitting the fridge. A kitchen design sorts this out before the joiner starts cutting boards. A mistake on a drawing costs a few minutes; a mistake in a finished carcass costs a new cabinet.

What the price depends on

The price depends on the size and shape of the kitchen, how many layout options you want, whether you need visualisations and how detailed the drawings are: a sketch for yourself and full working drawings for a joiner are very different amounts of work. Current rates are in the table.

Kitchen design2750–3500 zł

Indicative prices. Ranges for a typical scope. Fixings included, materials separate. Minimum order 300 zł.

Units, appliances, the worktop and the renovation are not part of the design. If the designer offers to oversee installation, that is agreed separately. The handyman’s offer says exactly what the work includes.

Layout: single wall, galley, L, U and island

A single-wall kitchen suits narrow rooms. A galley with two parallel runs gives lots of storage but needs a walkway between them. L and U shapes are comfortable to cook in, while an island or peninsula needs free space all round, or you end up squeezing past sideways.

Whatever the layout, the fridge, sink and hob should sit so you aren’t running between them, with a stretch of worktop left between the sink and the hob. The dishwasher goes next to the sink, and the sink stays close to the soil stack, or the waste pipe has to run across the whole kitchen.

Besides the layout, a design usually includes a survey, visualisations, wall elevations with cabinet sizes, positions for sockets and water points, space for the cooker hood and lighting over the worktop. Have your appliance list with dimensions ready early, because the housings are sized to it.

Gas, ventilation and electrics

A gas cooker or gas pipe may only be moved by someone qualified for gas work, and the joints are leak-tested afterwards. A motorised cooker hood often may not be connected to the only natural ventilation duct, especially in a kitchen with gas. The chimney sweep (kominiarz) decides that after checking the ducts. An induction hob and an oven usually need their own circuit, connected and tested by an electrician holding SEP qualifications. The design shows where the points go, but nobody may connect them without the right qualifications. Ask the handyman in the offer which of these they do themselves.

How the work goes

  1. You describe the kitchen and send photos, and the handyman asks follow-up questions.
  2. Survey: walls, window, radiator, stack, gas, ventilation, existing sockets.
  3. A talk about how you cook, what you store and which appliances you need.
  4. Layout options, of which you choose one.
  5. Visualisations and revisions, in the agreed number.
  6. Cabinet drawings and plans for sockets, water and lighting, delivered as PDF files.

Common mistakes

  • The room was measured at one point only, the walls aren’t straight, and a cabinet didn’t fit.
  • The radiator, window, door swing and windowsill were forgotten.
  • The dishwasher is far from the sink, with a hose running across half the kitchen.
  • No space between the sink and the hob to even chop vegetables.
  • Too few sockets above the worktop, so an extension lead lives there for good.
  • The fridge was put right up against the oven.
  • Appliances chosen after the design, so a housing ended up the wrong size.

What to prepare

  • A floor plan if you have one, plus photos of every wall, the window, radiator, gas pipe and vent grille.
  • Your appliance list, ideally with models and dimensions.
  • How you use the kitchen: cooking daily or rarely, how many people live there.
  • Examples of kitchens you like, and what bothers you about the current one.
  • A rough budget for units and appliances.
  • Clear access to the walls on the day of the survey.

Frequently asked questions

Can the design be done for flat-pack units from a chain store?

Yes, it can be drawn for a specific store’s modular system. Say so at the start so the cabinet sizes match the catalogue.

Do I need a design if a joiner is making the kitchen?

The joiner measures and draws too, but a design lets you compare quotes from several joiners against the same drawings.

Can the sink move to another wall?

Often, if there is enough fall for the waste pipe. How far from the stack it can realistically go becomes clear during the survey.

How long does a kitchen design take?

It depends on the size, the number of options and how quickly you reply to drafts. The handyman gives the timing in their offer.

How to order

Describe the kitchen in the app: its size, what you want to change and which appliances you need, and add photos. Tradespeople near you will send offers with their own price, timing and scope. Pick one by reviews; only that person sees your address.

You pay the handyman directly and they issue the invoice. They answer for their own design and will correct mistakes in their drawings. Crooked walls that weren’t visible during the survey, and installation that didn’t follow the design, are not on them.
