What the price depends on
Labour is priced per square metre. The rate depends on the area, how much thatch and moss there is, the lie of the land and how easy it is to get the machine in: an open lawn is quicker than one broken up by flower beds, trees and narrow paths. Current labour rates are in the table.
| Service | Price |
|---|---|
| Lawn scarifying | 1,50–3,50 zł/m² |
Indicative prices. Ranges for a typical scope. Fixings included, materials separate. Minimum order 300 zł.
Grass seed for overseeding, fertiliser and sand are paid for separately. Scarifying pulls out a lot of material, and bagging it up and taking it away is a separate item too. If the lawn has to be mown first, that is a separate service. The handyman lists all of this in the offer.

Scarifying or aeration
A scarifier cuts into the turf with vertical blades at a shallow depth and lifts the thatch and moss to the surface. An aerator does something else: it spikes the soil or pulls out small plugs of earth so air and water can reach the roots. Aeration helps where the soil is compacted, for example a lawn the kids run around on all summer. The two are often done one after the other, scarifying first.
The best time is spring, once the soil has dried out and the grass is growing, or early autumn. It isn’t done on a wet lawn, in heat or in drought. A new lawn in its first year is best left alone. Once a year is usually enough, and if there is little thatch you can skip it.
A quick test: drag a rake firmly across the lawn. If it pulls up a lot of dry brown material, it is time.
Safety first
The scarifier’s blades spin fast and can throw out stones. Children and pets should stay out of the garden while it runs. Hoses, garden cables and sprinkler heads must be removed or marked beforehand, because the blades will cut them.
How the job goes
- The lawn is checked: how much thatch and moss, any bare patches, where hoses and irrigation run.
- The grass is cut short if it hasn’t been mown yet.
- The blade depth is set to suit the turf, starting shallow.
- The area is worked in strips, heavily matted spots sometimes in a second direction.
- The thatch is raked up and bagged.
- If ordered, bare patches are overseeded, and the lawn is fed and watered.
Common mistakes
- Scarifying wet grass, so the machine tears the turf out in clumps.
- Blades set too deep, damaging the roots.
- Done in a heatwave without watering, and the lawn scorched.
- Thatch left lying on the lawn, smothering the grass again.
- Bare patches not overseeded, so weeds and moss took them over.
- Scarifying a new lawn that isn’t a year old yet.
What to prepare
- The rough lawn area, from a site plan if you have one.
- Photos of the lawn from a distance and close up, especially mossy areas.
- Markers on sprinkler heads, hoses and cables.
- A clear lawn: no toys, garden furniture or hoses.
- Access to the garden: the gate, a way in for the machine, a key if you won’t be there.
- A decision on overseeding, fertiliser and removal. If the machine is electric, ask the handyman whether they will need a socket.
Frequently asked questions
When is the best time to scarify a lawn?
In spring, once the soil has dried and the grass is growing, or in early autumn. Not in heat, drought or on a wet lawn.
Can I walk on the lawn after scarifying?
Yes, but go easy for a while, especially where patches have been overseeded. Keep watering until the grass recovers.
Does the lawn need overseeding afterwards?
If bare soil shows once the thatch is out, yes, or weeds will move in. The handyman can tell from photos where it is needed.
How long does the job take?
It depends on the area and how much thatch there is. The handyman gives the timing in their offer.
How to order
Describe the lawn in the app: its size and condition, and whether you need mowing, overseeding and removal. Add photos. Tradespeople near you will send offers with their own price and timing. Pick one by reviews; only that person sees your address.
You pay the handyman directly and they issue the invoice. They answer for their own work and will put it right if they missed areas or damaged something that was marked. Unmarked pipes and cables, poor soil and the weather after the job are not on them.
