Where the glow and blinking come from
The backlight in a switch needs current from somewhere. In the simplest design it flows through the light fitting even when the light is off. An incandescent bulb never noticed. An LED bulb has electronics inside that slowly charge from that tiny current until it flashes for a moment, or glows just enough to see.
Ospel, a Polish maker of switches and sockets, offers backlit switches in several ranges, Sonata among them. This isn’t a quirk of one brand: backlit switches from other makers do the same with some LED bulbs. It depends on the particular bulb, its wattage and how many lights hang off one switch.
There are three ways out. A switch without a backlight, if you can live without it. Different bulbs that don’t react to that current, which often comes down to trial and error. Or an extra component at the light fitting that takes the current instead; the electrician decides on that on site. Some switches also power the backlight separately, if there’s a neutral wire in the box.

Ospel light switch replacement: common mistakes
- Buying a backlit switch without checking which bulbs are in the light.
- Fitting a higher-wattage bulb to “stop the blinking”. Sometimes it works, sometimes not, and the bill goes up.
- Hunting for a fault in a new switch that’s doing exactly what it should.
- Swapping it with the breaker on, because the light was off.
- Changing every switch in the flat to backlit at once, without trying one first.

- A photo of the switch and the light fitting, and of the bulb box if you can.
- How many bulbs and fittings are on that one switch.
- A decision on whether you need the backlight or a plain rocker will do.
Work on a switch starts only after the breaker is off and a tester has confirmed it. A light that’s off doesn’t mean the box is dead.
How to book it
