Walk-in wardrobe design: what you get before ordering furniture

A windowless room that the developer called a dressing room. Bare walls, one door, boxes on the floor from the move. You can call a furniture maker straight away, or first work out on paper where the rails, the drawers, the ironing board and the vacuum cleaner will go. A walk-in wardrobe design answers those questions before anyone cuts a single board. This article covers the design itself: what you get and how to order it. Making and fitting the wardrobe is a separate service.

What the price depends on

The price of the design comes down to the size and shape of the room, how many layout options you want, whether you need a 3D visual and how detailed the documentation should be. A sketch with the main dimensions and a full cutting list are priced differently. Rates are in the table.

Walk-in wardrobe design2250–2800 zł

Indicative prices. Ranges for a typical scope. Fixings included, materials separate. Minimum order 300 zł.

The design doesn’t cover materials, the furniture itself or assembly. Extra rounds of changes beyond those agreed, or a trip far outside the city, are set out in the designer’s offer.

What the design includes

A survey of the room: walls, height, reveals, sockets, switches, radiator, window if there is one. Every one of these moves the sections around. A radiator behind the door that nobody noticed can wipe out a whole column of drawers.

A zone layout: long clothes, short ones, shelves for folded things, drawers for underwear, shoes, a spot for suitcases. A good design starts from what you own, not from how many sections fit on the wall.

Drawings with the size of every section and the heights of rails and shelves. A visual is often added so you can see the room with doors and lighting in advance.

A parts and hardware list: board, edging, runners, hinges, profiles. With it you can ask several makers for a price and compare offers on the same data. Without one, everyone counts their own way.

If the wardrobe will have lighting or a new socket, the design marks where the power runs. Connecting it to the wiring is an electrician’s job and isn’t part of the design.

How the work goes

  1. A short conversation or questionnaire: what you store, who uses the wardrobe, roughly what you plan to spend on the furniture.
  2. A survey on site. If the designer works remotely, from your measurements and photos.
  3. A first layout, sometimes two or three to choose from.
  4. Changes: sections moved, heights adjusted, spare drawers dropped.
  5. At the end you get the drawings, the visual if you ordered one, and the parts list.

Common mistakes

  • Designing for a nice picture rather than your own clothes. Six months later half the shelves are empty and there’s nowhere to hang a coat.
  • Forgetting the door into the wardrobe itself: it opens inwards and hits a section.
  • The same depth everywhere. Hangers need one depth; folded jumpers on a shelf need less.
  • No ventilation in a closed room without a window, so clothes start to smell musty.
  • A design with no parts list. The maker recalculates everything anyway, and there’s nothing to compare offers against.
  • Measurements taken before plastering, and the alcove ends up narrower after finishing.

What to prepare

  • The developer’s floor plan if you have it, or at least a photo of each wall.
  • A list of your things. Rough is fine: how many hangers are in use now, how many pairs of shoes.
  • Who will use the wardrobe and how tall they are, since that sets the rail heights.
  • Examples you like, and ones you definitely don’t.
  • A rough budget for the furniture itself. It decides the materials in the specification.

Frequently asked questions

Can I skip the design?

For a simple wardrobe in an alcove, often yes; a furniture maker will sketch it. A design pays its way with an oddly shaped room, a busy interior, or when you want several makers to quote on the same drawings.

Can I hand the design to any maker?

Usually yes, that’s what the parts list is for. Check in the offer what format you’ll get the files in and whether you can pass them on to other contractors.

How long does the design take?

It depends on the number of options and rounds of changes. The designer gives the timing in their offer.

Does the designer need to visit?

For a separate room it’s better. Measuring in person catches what photos miss: a corner out of square, a pipe in the corner, a radiator behind the door. For a simple alcove your own measurements are often enough.

How to order

Describe the room in the app, add a floor plan or photos and say what you want to store. Specialists near you will send offers with their own price, timing and scope of the design. Compare what each one includes, read the reviews and pick one; only that person sees your address.

You pay directly and the contractor issues the invoice. They stand behind their own design and will correct a mistake in their own measurements or drawings. Wrong measurements you sent yourself, and how another maker later assembles the furniture, are not on them.
