What the job covers

Paint is half the job. The other half is what you never see afterwards: filled plug holes, primer, covered floors and skirting. A decorator who goes straight for the roller saves an hour, and you spend the next year spotting every bump against the light.

  • Filling holes and cracks
  • Skim coat and ceiling levelling
  • Priming before painting
  • Stripping old wallpaper
  • Painting radiators, pipes and windows

Painting from preparation to the final coat

Good painting is mostly preparation. First covering furniture, windows and floors, then repairing the walls: plug holes, cracks, sometimes stripping old wallpaper. Next comes priming before painting to even out absorbency, and only at the end painting walls and ceilings in two coats.

A painter also works on wood and metal: window painting, doors and radiators. On old timber it often starts with stripping old paint, because a new coat will not hold on a flaking one.

Walls in different buildings

In pre-war tenements in Mokotów or Żoliborz, walls often carry several layers of paint over old lime plaster. On a surface like that the painter checks the paint is sound and picks a primer that will consolidate it. Prefab blocks typically have cracks along the panel joints, which come back if painted over without reinforcing tape. In new developer flats the walls are usually flat, but fresh gypsum plaster is very absorbent, so without primer the paint dries patchy.

Colour and paint

You choose the colour, ideally from a test patch on the wall, because a colour on the shop chart looks different in daylight at home. For kitchens, hallways and children’s rooms, a scrub-resistant paint is the better choice. The painter will help work out the amount: two coats over the whole area, from one production batch.

What affects the price

Painting is priced per metre of wall, not floor. The final amount depends on:

  • the walls: how many holes, cracks and flaking patches need fixing
  • the number of colours and sharp lines between them
  • ceiling height and decorative mouldings
  • whether furniture stays in the room and needs covering
  • going from a dark colour to a light one, which takes extra coats

What to watch out for

  • Skipping the primer

The paint dries patchy and needs a third coat. Primer costs less than the extra paint.

  • One coat "to see how it looks"

On a fresh wall one coat almost always shows through. The range includes two coats, and that is how it should stay.

  • Pulling the tape too late

It comes off while the paint is still slightly wet. Once dry, it takes a strip of wall with it.

  • Choosing the colour from a chart

The same colour looks different in daylight and under a bulb. A test patch on the wall saves repainting the whole room.

Before the visit

  1. Paint in your colour and primer (or agree with the decorator who buys them)
  2. Photos of walls and ceiling, cracks close up
  3. Rough room size and ceiling height
  4. Furniture pulled away from the walls or moved out
  5. Pictures, shelves and socket covers taken down, if you can

Questions about painting a flat

How much does it cost to paint a room?

Decorators price per metre of wall; the range is in the table and the price list. The exact amount comes in the offer, based on photos.

Is paint included?

No. The range covers labour and small fixings. You buy the paint and primer, or ask the decorator to buy them and pay for them separately.

Will the decorator fill the holes?

Yes, filling and skim coat are separate lines in the price list. Bigger damage is worth showing in a photo.

How long does a flat take?

A room usually takes a day or two including drying. A whole flat depends on the size and the state of the walls. You see the timing in the offer.

Can I stay at home while they paint?

Yes, with water-based paints that is normal. Keep the windows open and stay out of the room while the walls dry.

Will the painter move the furniture?

Yes, they move it into the middle of the room and cover it. Carrying heavy furniture out of the flat is a separate service.

How long does paint take to dry between coats?

Usually a few hours, depending on the paint, temperature and humidity. A painter never puts the second coat on a first that is still wet.

Can I have painting done in winter?

Yes, in a heated flat. Just ventilate in moderation so the paint does not dry in a draught.
