What the job covers

Hanging something on a wall seems easy until the plug starts spinning in the hole. The wall decides everything: concrete, brick, silicate block and plasterboard each need different fixings, and any of them can hide a cable or a pipe. The tradesperson checks the wall with a detector, picks fixings for the weight and hangs it so nothing slips a month later.

Everything that hangs on a wall

A TV on a bracket is only the start. The same service covers mirrors and pictures, wall shelves, curtain poles and ceiling tracks, and curtain rail repair when one has pulled out plugs and all. It is easiest to bundle several of these into one job, since the handyman arrives with a drill, a level and a set of fixings anyway.

The wall decides the fixing

Whether a TV or mirror hangs safely depends on the wall. Concrete in prefab blocks holds firmly but is hard to drill, and it is easy to hit the rebar. Brick and hollow block in newer buildings need plugs that expand in the cavities. Plasterboard, common in new flats in Białołęka or Wilanów, will only carry a heavy item if the fixing goes into a stud or special plugs are used. Before drilling, the handyman checks for cables and pipes with a detector.

For TVs the bracket matters too. A swing-arm bracket acts as a lever and loads the wall far more than a flat one, so on unreinforced plasterboard it is best avoided.

Cables and height

A TV mounted too high strains your neck. The centre of the screen usually ends up at the eye level of someone sitting on the sofa. Cables can be hidden in surface trunking or in a chase in the wall with an extra socket behind the TV, but the second option means chasing the wall and usually an electrician.

What affects the price

Mounting is usually priced per item. The amount in the offer depends on:

  • the wall type: concrete takes longer to drill, plasterboard needs special fixings
  • weight and size: a large TV or a mirror over 20 kg is a two-person job
  • the bracket: a swivel arm needs stronger fixings than a flat one
  • how many items: five pictures are priced differently from one
  • hiding cables: a cable trunking or a chase in the wall, which is an electrician job

What to watch out for

  • Drilling without checking the wall

Cables usually run vertically above sockets and switches. A detector costs less than fixing a drilled cable.

  • A TV on standard plasterboard plugs

A swivel bracket acts as a lever. Plasterboard needs heavy-duty anchors or fixing into the metal stud.

  • A mirror held up only by adhesive

Mounting adhesive holds while the wall is dry and flat. In a bathroom a heavy mirror goes on brackets or plugs.

  • A TV mounted too high

The middle of the screen should sit roughly at eye level for someone on the sofa. Any higher and your neck will tell you.

Before the visit

  1. A photo of the wall and the spot
  2. The TV model, or the size and weight of the mirror
  3. The bracket, plugs or curtain pole, if you bought them yourself
  4. The height marked where it should hang
  5. What the wall is made of, if you know: concrete, brick or plasterboard

Questions about mounting TVs, mirrors and shelves

How much does TV wall mounting cost?

Tradespeople usually price per item, and the ranges are in the table and the price list. The bracket counts as material: you buy it or agree that the tradesperson brings one.

How much does it cost to hang a mirror?

Mirrors are priced per item, depending on the weight, size and wall. The range is in the table and the exact amount comes in the offer after a photo.

Will they hide the cables?

A cable trunking can go on together with the TV. Cables inside the wall mean a chase and an electrician, which is a separate item in the price list.

Can a TV go on plasterboard?

Yes, with the right anchors or fixed into the stud. For a big screen on a swivel arm the tradesperson may suggest another spot.

Do they bring their own tools?

Yes, the drill and level are theirs. Plugs for standard walls usually too; anything unusual is agreed in the chat.

Who is responsible for the quality?

The tradesperson who does the job, and they issue the invoice too. The platform connects you with tradespeople: offers and ratings are in the app, and that is where you agree the scope.

Will the handyman bring a TV bracket?

They can, if you give the TV model and bracket type in the job. More often the client buys a bracket matching the TV’s VESA pattern.

Can a TV go above a fireplace?

It can, but the heat and the height are bad for both the electronics and comfortable viewing. The handyman will suggest whether there is a safe spot nearby.

What about the holes from the old bracket?

The handyman can fill them. Painting that patch of wall is a separate job.
