Clothes airer installation: what the job involves
A ceiling airer in the bathroom or on the balcony, a fold-out wall dryer or balcony lines save space in a small flat. Wet washing is heavy, so the airer has to be fixed into the ceiling slab or wall with plugs chosen for the material, not just screwed in.
The price is per job. Fixing to a suspended ceiling or a tiled bathroom wall takes more work.
What the installation covers
- choosing a spot where it will not clash with the door or light;
- checking for cables and pipes where the holes will go;
- drilling concrete, tiles or plasterboard with the right bits;
- fitting the airer and its pulleys or lines;
- checking the lifting mechanism and that it holds the load.
Drilling into tiles
In bathrooms the airer often goes on a tiled wall. Holes are drilled with a tile bit and no hammer action, ideally in a grout line or away from the tile edge to avoid cracking. Plasterboard needs cavity anchors.
What to prepare
The airer with all its fixings. Give the mounting spot and the wall or ceiling type in the request and add a photo. For ceiling airers, note the room height.
Common questions
Are the plugs in the box good enough?
Not always. For concrete and plasterboard the tradesperson often uses stronger plugs.
Can an airer go on a balcony in a block of flats?
On your own balcony, usually yes. Fixings on the façade may need the manager’s consent.
Is drilling tiles safe?
With the right bit, yes. It helps to have a spare tile in case old, brittle tiles crack.
