Coat rack installation

A hallway coat rack carries the whole family’s jackets, rucksacks and bags, and someone always tugs on it taking a coat off. Fitting coat racks means fixing a wall rack, hook rail or hallway panel so it takes the weight and does not pull out of the wall.

The price is per job. The wall type and the number of fixing points affect the time.

What fitting covers

• marking the height and levelling it;
• checking the wall for cables where it will be drilled;
• drilling and choosing plugs for concrete, brick or plasterboard;
• fixing the rack and checking it holds;
• vacuuming up the drilling dust.

Walls and plugs

In concrete and brick, ordinary expansion plugs hold well. Plasterboard needs cavity fixings or a hit on the stud. A heavy rack with a shoe shelf on bare plasterboard starts pulling away over time, so the tradesperson will first check what is behind the surface.

The rack with its fixings and the spot where it will hang. Give the number of racks and the wall material, if you know it, in the request. A photo of the hallway helps price the job.
