Built-in wardrobe installation

A built-in wardrobe fills an alcove from floor to ceiling and wall to wall, so every crooked corner and every centimetre of floor slope shows straight away in the door gaps. Fitting one covers setting up and levelling the carcasses, scribing the filler panels, fitting the tracks and sliding doors, and adjusting the whole unit.

The price is per job. The width, the number of modules and whether the doors slide or swing all affect it.

What fitting covers

• measuring the alcove and checking the walls are plumb and the floor level;
• standing the carcasses and joining them together;
• scribing filler panels to uneven walls and ceiling;
• fitting tracks, doors and interior fittings;
• adjusting the doors so they run lightly and close evenly.

Made to measure or modular

A made-to-measure wardrobe arrives with finished parts and a drawing, and the tradesperson builds it on site. A wardrobe from shop modules, such as PAX with sliding doors, usually needs fitting into the alcove with filler panels and strips. Say in the request which one you have.

What to prepare

An empty, clean alcove, all the wardrobe parts on site, and the drawing or design from the maker. Give the alcove dimensions and add photos. If cables or pipes run in the wall or ceiling, mark where.
