Viega Trap Replacement in Warsaw: Stop the Drain Smell

The bathroom drain in a Praga flat smells of sewage, and the floor under the basin is wet every morning. The Viega trap has been there for years and looks fine. The smell and the water say otherwise.

Viega traps: what to know before replacing one

Viega is a German maker of plumbing and drainage systems. It makes traps for basins and baths, plus shower tray drains, including flat ones set under the tiles. Where the trap sits decides how big the job is.

A basin trap is simple: the plumber undoes the nuts, fits a new one and checks it for leaks. For a bath he has to get behind the panel, so an access hatch helps. Shower trays are the hardest, because the trap is underneath, often under tiles. Some drains can be cleaned and resealed from above, through the grate. If the body underneath leaks and there’s no access, you’re talking about opening up the tiling, and it’s worth knowing that before you book a “quick fix”.

You don’t always need a whole new trap. A leak at a joint is often an old cone washer or a pipe screwed in crooked. A smell can come from a dried-out water seal in a bathroom nobody uses much, and a glass of water sorts that.

Before booking, check what is actually leaking. Wipe the trap dry, put a paper towel under it and run the water for a minute. A wet patch under a joint means the trap. Drips from above, from the tap or a hose, are a different fault and a different line in the job, so it helps to know that first.

Common mistakes with traps

  • Buying a trap without checking the diameter of the waste outlet in the wall. An adapter can be found, but it’s better to know first.
  • Tightening the nuts with a wrench as far as they go. Plastic threads crack and washers deform.
  • Silicone on joints that already have their own washer. Next time nothing will come apart.
  • A bath with no access panel at all. Every repair then means breaking into the panel.
  • Pouring drain chemicals into a trap that already leaks. The corrosive stuff ends up on the cabinet and the floor.

Getting ready

  • Clear the cabinet under the basin or open the access panel by the bath.
  • Take photos of the trap and where it goes into the wall.
  • If you still have the manual or box for the trap, keep it handy: the plumber will find the right part faster.
  • If you’re buying the trap yourself, agree the model with the plumber. Materials are paid separately from the labour.

Booking, step by step

  1. In the app you describe where the trap is and what’s wrong, and add photos. The plumber can see straight away whether access is easy.
  2. Plumbers who take this kind of work in Warsaw send bids with their own price and date. You pick one by price and reviews, and his phone number and your address are shared after you choose.
  3. When the job’s done, you pay the plumber directly, and he issues the invoice.

The plumber answers for the trap he fitted and will fix his own leak. An old waste pipe in the wall or tiling with no access hatch is not on him.
