Where the seals are in Viega systems
Viega makes water supply systems, shower drains and wall frames with concealed cisterns. There are seals in all of them, but they’re replaced in very different ways.
The concealed cistern is the most common case. Water running into the bowl usually means a worn flush valve seal, or limescale stopping the seal from sitting flat. If the cistern keeps refilling, the fill valve is often to blame. The plumber reaches both through the service opening behind the flush plate. He just needs parts that fit your frame model, so a photo of the label and the plate helps a lot.
How do you tell the cistern leaks if you can’t hear anything? Hold a dry piece of toilet paper against the back of the bowl. If it’s wet after a minute, water is running all the time.
The shower drain is the second typical case. Seals at the grate and in the drain’s trap can often be changed from above. It’s worse when water is getting under the tray rather than down the drain: then the first job is finding exactly where the damp comes from.
Pipes with press fittings are the third case, and there the seal isn’t replaced at all. The O-ring sits inside a fitting that’s been pressed on for good. If a joint like that leaks, the plumber cuts out a section and fits a new fitting, which is a different job with different tools.

Mistakes with seal replacement
- Buying a seal that looks similar without checking the cistern model. It almost fits, and almost means a leak.
- Cleaning the seal seat with a hard tool. A scratch in the plastic lets water through just like old rubber.
- Starting work without closing the valve at the cistern.
- Trying to tighten a press fitting with a wrench.
- Putting it off because it’s “only a bit of water”. A leaking cistern runs day and night, and it shows on the bill.
What to prepare
- If you know how, take off the flush plate and photograph the inside of the opening and the frame label.
- Check that the isolation valve at the cistern closes.
- Wipe the plate and the tiles around it so nothing falls into the cistern.
Before any work on water, shut the valve and empty the cistern.
