Honeywell fittings at the water inlet
Honeywell is a brand name on plumbing fittings best known for filters and pressure reducing valves. They are often fitted together with the stopcock in one spot where water enters the flat: the valve, a filter after it, and a pressure reducer if the riser pressure is high.
Whether you need the full set depends on the building. A filter makes sense where the riser sends sand and rust through, which is normal in older blocks. A reducer helps if taps bang and the hoses under the sink split more often than they should. The stopcock itself is always worth having: without one, every leak turns into a hunt for the caretaker.
A ball valve shuts with a quarter turn, and the lever shows at a glance whether it is open. Old screw-down valves with a round handle fur up and stop sealing after some years. Those are the ones that usually get replaced.
Position matters too. A valve before the water meter sits next to the meter seal, so replacing it usually needs the building office’s say-so. A valve after the meter is your side of the pipework, and that call is yours.

Fitting mistakes
- Stopcock tiled in with no access. In an emergency nobody finds it in time.
- Filter fitted backwards. The arrow on the body shows the flow direction and has to be followed.
- No room under the filter for flushing. It needs rinsing out now and then, and under a cabinet that is impossible.
- A valve left open and untouched for years. Turn it now and then so it doesn’t seize.
If the flat has already flooded, start with the steps in flooded apartment: what to do first.
Before the visit
- Find where the water enters the flat and photograph that spot.
- Ask the building office how to shut the riser if the old valve won’t hold, and agree a time.
- Decide whether you want just the valve or the filter and reducer too.
- Warn the neighbours if the riser will be off.
Booking through the app
- Describe the situation: which valve, what pipes, whether to add a filter. Add photos of the spot.
- Plumbers send bids with their own price and date. You can ask questions in the chat before choosing.
- You pick one by price, rating and reviews, and only then do phone number and address show. You pay him directly, and the invoice comes from him.
The valve, filter, reducer and fittings are bought separately from the labour, and taking away old fittings is extra too. The plumber answers for the joints he made and will redo his own fitting. Corroded riser pipes and hidden faults in the system are not on him.
Before anyone undoes the old valve, the riser has to be shut; with an old screw-down stopcock, just turning it is not enough.
