Viega: valves and press connections
Viega is a German maker of pipe systems, best known for press fittings. In those systems, fittings and valves are not screwed onto a thread but crimped onto the pipe with a press tool whose jaws match the system. The joint is quick and tight, but without that tool it can’t be made.
That changes how a valve is replaced. On old threaded pipework the valve is unscrewed and a new one screwed in. On a press system the old valve is cut out and the new one pressed on. So say in the order which system the plumber will be dealing with, or better, show a close-up photo.
Sometimes it is a mix: old steel pipe in the riser and newer sections inside the flat. Then the transition from old to new is a separate part that gets chosen on site.
While you are at it, check the valves next to it. If one has seized over the years, its neighbour is usually no better. Swapping both in one visit is simpler than two separate jobs and two riser shut-offs.
What it costs and how to book: a good plumber in Warsaw.
How not to make it worse
- Don’t force a seized lever with a wrench. The spindle snaps, and then the valve shuts off nothing.
- Don’t smear the gland with whatever is to hand hoping it stops weeping. The drip usually comes back.
- Don’t buy press fittings “just in case” without checking the system. The press jaws have to match the fitting profile.
- Don’t wait for a burst to replace it. A valve that won’t close is useless exactly when you need it.
Before the plumber comes
- Photograph the valve and a stretch of pipe on both sides, ideally with any markings on the fittings visible.
- Check whether the main valve for the flat holds. If not, arrange a riser shut-off with the building office.
- Empty the cupboard and leave room to work.
- If there are several valves, mark in the photo which one is to go.
Booking in the app
Describe which valve and where, add the photos, and mention the system if you know it. Plumbers reply with bids, each with his own price and date, and sort out details in the chat. You choose whoever suits you on price, rating and reviews. Phone number and address only show after you choose.
You pay the plumber directly, and he issues the invoice. The valve, fittings and any adaptors are bought separately from the labour, as is taking the old parts away. He answers for the joints he pressed or screwed himself and redoes his own fitting. A corroded riser and hidden faults in the old pipework are not his responsibility.
Water has to be shut above the valve being replaced, and checked with a tap open, before anyone cuts into the pipe.
