Kanlux is more about function than looks

Kanlux is a Polish brand that mostly makes practical lighting: ceiling fittings, sealed fittings, LED panels, downlights, models with sensors. With these, the specs matter more than the design, and they’re what you need to read before fitting.

Start with the IP rating. In a bathroom, on a balcony or in a garage, the fitting has to be rated for that spot. An ordinary indoor ceiling light above a shower is trouble, only a question of when.

Then the motion or dusk sensor. It only works well if it can “see” the walkway rather than a wall. After fitting, the sensitivity and the on-time get set. If there’s an ordinary wall switch in the hallway, decide beforehand whether it stays on permanently, otherwise the sensor has nothing to switch.

LED panels for suspended ceilings come with a separate driver. It needs room somewhere, and it shouldn’t sit directly on insulation wool.

Communal spaces are their own case. In a stairwell, cellar or shared corridor the wiring often belongs to the building, so talk to the building management before changing anything.

Where it usually goes wrong

Most problems start at the shop, not on the ladder.

• A fitting without the right IP rating in a bathroom or outdoors. Moisture gets in, and a few months later something starts to spark.
• A motion sensor aimed at a window or radiator. The light switches on by itself, or never goes off.
• The gasket in a sealed fitting seated badly after the wires go in. The IP rating then exists only on the box.
• A metal fitting with no earth wire in an old block.

Before the electrician comes

• Check the IP rating on the box and whether the fitting has a sensor.
• Photograph the spot, the old light and the wall switch.
• For a balcony or cellar, find out where the cable runs from and whether it reaches that far.
• Leave the fuse box accessible.

The electrician answers for his own fitting and redoes it if needed. A damp wall or old wiring in the building is not on him.
