Swapping into an existing kitchen

First, width. Built-in dishwashers are usually 45 or 60 cm wide, and the new one has to match the old. The height of the gap under the worktop matters too, and so does depth, since the hoses need room behind the machine. Miele lists the gap dimensions it needs in the installation instructions, and it’s better to check them before you buy than on the day of the visit.

Going from 45 to 60 cm is a kitchen alteration: the cabinet next door has to come out or be narrowed. It can be done, but it’s a separate job, closer to joinery than to connecting an appliance.

Second, the panel. If the old dishwasher was fully integrated, its panel can often be moved onto the new one. The mounting holes won’t necessarily line up, though, so the tradesperson drills new ones using the template from the box. Sometimes the plinth needs trimming or replacing.

Third, the connections. The old hoses leave with the old machine. A valve under the sink that nobody has touched in years should be tested before anything gets undone: if it won’t close, it has to be replaced. The drain goes into a trap with a spigot, looped up under the worktop, and power comes from an earthed socket in the next cabinet.

Then levelling, fixing to the worktop and a short test programme with a look under the sink.

With water and power, the usual rule applies: breaker and valve first, spanner second.

Where swaps get complicated

• A new machine taller than the gap. The worktop has to come up, or the dishwasher won’t go in.
• The old panel forced onto old holes. The door hangs crooked.
• A socket left behind the old machine. Now is the moment to move it into the next cabinet.
• Nobody has decided what happens to the old dishwasher.
