What is different in a new building
Ventilation in new blocks varies: passive with a grille in the kitchen, or mechanical, sometimes with heat recovery. Whether the hood may be ducted into the shaft depends on the building design. Look it up in the flat’s documents or ask the building manager. Often the only permitted option is recirculation with a carbon filter, and Faber hoods are made to run that way.
Second, height. A chimney hood has a decorative cover that has to reach from the hood to the ceiling. With higher ceilings the standard cover can fall short. Measure from the hob to the ceiling and compare with the figure in the model’s manual.
The hood sits on the centre line of the hob and should not be narrower than it. With the kitchen assembled, the hob is already in place, so the centre and height are marked from it rather than from the cabinets. It is also the moment to check the hood will not block or catch the door of the cabinet next to it.

Island hoods and services in the wall
Faber also makes island hoods that hang over a hob in the middle of the kitchen. These are fixed to the ceiling slab, and the power cable has to come out of the ceiling right above the hob. If the electrician did not leave one there, a cable has to be run across the ceiling, which is a separate job.
A wall hood has a different catch: pipes and cables may run in the wall above the hob. New flats usually come with photos or drawings of the services from the developer; keep them handy before any drilling. When the power is connected, the breaker is off. No exceptions.
Where it tends to go wrong
- Hood ducted into a shaft the building design never meant for it.
- Chimney cover too short, with a gap under the ceiling spotted only after fitting.
- Hole drilled right where a cable runs through the wall.
- Island hood with no cable in the ceiling, so a wire trails in trunking across half the kitchen.
Getting ready
- Find out from the documents what ventilation the building has and whether the hood can be ducted.
- Measure from the hob to the ceiling.
- Have the service drawings ready if you have them.
- Photograph the wall or ceiling above the hob and where the cable comes out.
