How an IKEA kitchen is put together
IKEA kitchens are built from METOD modules. Base cabinets stand on adjustable legs, and wall cabinets hang on a metal suspension rail screwed to the wall. The rail is levelled once and carries the whole upper row. Hang it on a slant and every cabinet after it repeats the error.
The worktop is cut on site. Cut-outs are made for the sink and hob, and the edges and cut-outs are sealed, or the chipboard under the surface drinks water and swells. If the wall is crooked, the back edge of the worktop is scribed to it and the gap is covered with an upstand.
Connecting appliances is a separate item. The sink goes in with its trap and tap, the dishwasher is hooked up to water and waste, the oven and hob to the power supply. A powerful induction hob often needs its own circuit.
Safety: gas is connected only by a fitter with a gas licence, and the hob circuit is a job for a qualified electrician. Turn off the water before anyone works on the pipes.

What most often goes wrong
- Base units set to the floor instead of to a level. The worktop ends up wavy.
- The wall-unit rail fixed with plugs that don’t suit the wall. Loaded with crockery, it pulls away.
- Worktop cut-outs left unsealed. A year later the edge by the sink swells.
- The dishwasher installed without checking the drain hose, so waste water flows back in.
- Fronts not adjusted after installation. Uneven gaps between the doors are the first thing you see.
Preparing for the fit
- Get the old kitchen out, or decide who removes and disposes of it.
- Check where the water, waste and sockets are, and compare with the plan.
- Keep your IKEA Planner design to hand, ideally printed.
- Unpack and check the appliances before the fitter arrives.
Choosing fitters for a kitchen
A kitchen usually splits into several jobs: assembly, worktop, plumbing and electrics. In the app you can describe them in one order with the plan and photos of the walls. Fitters bid on their part or the whole thing, each at their own price. The order can go to different people, say one for assembly and another for the electrics.
You choose by price, rating and reviews, and contact details open after you pick. You pay each fitter directly and they issue the invoice. Materials, removing the old kitchen, rubbish disposal and carrying boxes up are paid separately. Whoever did the work answers for it and fixes his own mistakes. Crooked walls and old pipes are not on him.
Order in the app
Describe the job, add photos and the address. Tradespeople send their own prices and dates, and you pick one of the offers.
