What the spacer tells you
Saint-Gobain is a French group that, among much else, makes window glass. Glazing factories build sealed units for specific windows from its sheets. The spacer between the panes often carries printing: the unit maker, a date, sometimes the glass markings. Photograph it before the tradesperson comes. It makes it easier to work out what was in the window and to build a new unit of the same thickness.

A replacement is a chance to upgrade
The unit has to stay the same thickness or it won’t fit the sash. Within that thickness, though, the glass can change. Laminated glass, with a film inside, holds together when it breaks, which makes sense on the ground floor, in a balcony door and anywhere with small children. Acoustic glass cuts street noise. Glass with a low-emissivity coating keeps heat in better, and solar control glass stops a south-facing room from overheating.
Not everything fits in one unit, and not every combination makes sense in an old sash. The tradesperson will tell you what your window can take, and you can compare an offer for a different unit with one for a like-for-like swap.
Saint-Gobain glass replacement: common mistakes
- Ordering a thicker unit ‘because it’s warmer’. It won’t fit the sash, or it jams the hardware.
- Plain glass in a balcony door with toddlers around, when safety glass is an option.
- Ignoring which way the coating faces during fitting. A coated unit put in backwards loses the point.
- Removing the unit yourself. It’s heavy, and cracked glass cuts.
Saint-Gobain glass replacement: getting ready
- A photo of the window and a close-up of the damage.
- A photo of the printing on the spacer.
- A line on what you want: same as before, quieter, safer or warmer.
How to book it
In the app, describe what happened, add the photos and say whether you want the same unit or a different one. Tradespeople reply with offers at their own price, and you pick one by rating and reviews. Phone and address are shared after you choose. Expect two visits, measuring and glazing, because units are made to size. The unit is charged separately from the labour; you pay the tradesperson directly and they issue the invoice.
Order in the app
Describe the job, add photos and the address. Tradespeople send their own prices and dates, and you pick one of the offers.
Open the appThe tradesperson answers for how the unit is seated and will fix it if something’s off. The condition of a frame or sash they didn’t repair isn’t on them.
