Roto shutters: what to know before you buy
Roto is best known for roof windows, and the brand’s external shutters are made to fit specific sizes and types of its windows. So the starting point is the data plate on the window frame. It gives the type and size, and that is what the shutter is ordered by. A shutter that “nearly fits” leaves a gap for wind and water.
There are manual versions and electric ones, including solar-powered models. A mains-powered shutter needs a cable run, or at least a clear answer about where the power comes from.
Most of the job happens outside the window, around the flashing. On a roof window the fitter works through the open sash, at height, so access and weather matter. Nobody fits these in the rain.
If the shutter is already up and sticking, you may not need a new one. Leaves in the rails or a motor that has lost its settings are common causes. The fitter will say on site whether a repair makes sense, and a short video of the shutter moving, added to the order, helps him before he comes out.

Where installs go wrong
- The wrong size gets ordered because someone measured the opening from inside instead of reading the data plate.
- The flashing is damaged while fixing the side rails, and water later finds its way underneath.
- The motor cable is pushed through the frame any old way and the insulation cracks after a winter.
- Rails sit out of line, so the curtain rubs and rattles every time it moves.
- Nobody sets the motor limits. The shutter either presses too hard or stops short and leaves a gap.
Before the fitter comes
- Photograph the data plate on the frame, and the window from outside if you can.
- Buy the shutter for your window type and check that all the fixings are in the box.
- For an electric model, decide where the power will come from.
- Clear the space under the window so there is room to work.
Connecting an electric motor to the mains is a job for someone qualified in electrical work. Switch the circuit off first.
