Two different jobs with one name
Fakro makes roof windows and the accessories for them, internal blinds and external roller shutters among them. An internal blind darkens the room or softens the light. It fixes to the sash, nobody needs to go near the roof, and with the right size it doesn’t take long.
An external shutter stops the window heating up, because the sun is blocked before it reaches the glass. In an attic during a heatwave, that is the one that makes the difference. Fitting it is a bigger job: through the open sash, around the flashing, at height. Some models have an electric or solar motor, which helps with windows you can’t reach by hand.
Either way, the size comes from the window type on the data plate on the frame. A size taken with a tape measure “by eye” is a common reason for returns.
And if the blind is already there and has simply stopped working? Before buying a new one, show the fitter photos and a short video. A snapped cord, a loose bracket or a motor that has lost its settings is often a repair rather than a whole new set. He will tell you on site which makes more sense.

What spoils the result
- An internal blind bought to the size of the glass instead of the window code. It won’t sit in the side channels, or it leaves bright strips down the edges.
- An external shutter fitted in the rain or onto wet flashing. The seals don’t bed in and water sits under the metal.
- The motor cable pulled through the frame with no protection.
- Crooked side rails, so the fabric creases and the curtain rubs.
- Nobody checks afterwards that the shutter runs through its full travel.

- Clear space under the window and access to the handle.
Leave the mains connection of a motorised shutter to someone qualified in electrical work, and switch the circuit off before anyone starts.
