What to know about a decorative rail

The profile covers the mechanism the curtains run on, and that mechanism is usually separate, a track or a rod. Before anything gets drilled, check what’s in your set and what the curtains will actually hang from.
A light profile barely loads the wall. The curtains do, so the track is fixed with their weight in mind, especially heavy full-width curtains. In plasterboard that means cavity fixings or a timber batten behind the board.
A long run is built from sections. Joints are cut precisely, glued and filled, and then the whole profile is usually painted, joints included. That’s what makes it read as one line.
One more detail: where the curtains stack when they’re open. With a wall-to-wall rail, they have room to gather beside the window and the glass stays clear. Plan for that when marking out.

Mistakes that show later
- A joint right above the middle of the window, in the most visible spot.
- Sections cut without a mitre box, leaving a step at the joint.
- The track hung on standard plugs in plasterboard, sagging under heavy curtains.
- The profile left unpainted after filling, so the seams show in side light.
- Nobody checked the wall above the window for cables.
On safety: drilling spots above the window and near the ceiling get checked with a cable detector.
