Atlas is what goes under the tile
Atlas is a Polish maker of building chemicals, and plenty of tilers work with its products. The brand does not make tiles, so a request for “Atlas tile installation” almost always means laying any tile on Atlas adhesive and grout. Worth telling the tiler up front, so they know what to buy and how much.
Adhesive is chosen for the tile and the base. Small wall tiles on flat plaster are fine with a standard one; large porcelain on a floor, underfloor heating or a terrace need a flexible adhesive. The bag says what it is for, and it really is worth reading rather than grabbing the cheapest.
In a shower or bathroom, waterproofing goes on before the tiles: a liquid membrane with tape in the corners and collars around pipes. Grout is chosen for the spot as well; shower areas and kitchen splashbacks benefit from one that resists water and dirt better. Hold the colour against the tile in the shop.

Where people save, then pay later
- One adhesive for everything. On large tiles or a heated floor a standard adhesive cannot cope with movement, and tiles come loose.
- Skipping waterproofing because “tiles are waterproof anyway”. The grout is not, and a year later it is damp behind the tiles.
- Mixing adhesive by eye and in big batches. It starts to set before it can be used up.
- Grouting before the adhesive has cured. Joints sink and darken unevenly.
What to prepare
- The tile name and format so the tiler can pick the adhesive.
- Photos of walls and floor: plaster, old tiles or plasterboard each need a different primer.
- A note on whether there is underfloor heating.
- A decision on who buys the materials: you, from the tiler’s list, or the tiler.

Tiles, adhesive, grout, waterproofing, rubble removal and carrying the bags up are paid separately from the labour. Whoever laid the tiles answers for them and redoes their own work. Crooked walls and hidden defects in the base are not on them.
