Find the cause before picking up a saw

Before anyone takes the leaf off, work out what it is actually rubbing on. A new floor raises the level, so the bottom of the door scrapes along the whole swing. Doors also stick for other reasons, though: they sag on the hinges, swell with bathroom damp, or the frame shifts a little. Cutting the bottom off will not fix any of those, and sometimes makes things worse.

If the floor is the problem, the leaf comes off, the cut line is marked and the door is trimmed on a steady bench or trestles. DRE doors come in several finishes, so the tradesperson picks the method for the door in front of him: tape along the line, a guide rail, a sharp blade. The fresh edge then gets sealed. Bare board on the underside of a bathroom door soaks up moisture and starts to delaminate within a few months.

How much can come off depends on how the leaf is built. The bottom rail of the frame is not tall, and cutting through it exposes the core. With a big height difference, a threshold or a new rail glued in is often the saner option. You only see that once the door is off.

Once the leaf is back on, it is not only the bottom that gets checked. The door should close without a push, the latch should catch, and the gap along the frame should stay even top to bottom. If something is off, that is the moment for a small hinge adjustment, while the tools are still out.

DRE door trimming: common mistakes

• Trimming before every layer of flooring is down. A rug or threshold strip added later eats the gap again.
• Measuring at one point by the hinge. The floor under the swing is almost never flat.
• Cutting without tape, so the finish chips along the edge.
• Leaving the edge unsealed in a bathroom or kitchen.
• Trimming a door that has only sagged, when tightening the hinges would have done it.

• Take a photo of the bottom of the leaf and the mark on the floor.
