Start by looking at the fixing

Before any drilling, work out how your particular model mounts. Some shelves sit on visible brackets. Others have a hidden fixing, where a rail or pins go into the shelf itself. Hidden fixings look lighter, but the marking has to be spot on: you can’t nudge a hole a couple of millimetres afterwards.

Next, the fixings in the box. They don’t suit every wall. A short plastic plug holds well in concrete and just spins in plasterboard. Stud walls need cavity anchors or a fixing into the metal stud, and hollow brick needs a long plug that expands inside.

Then weight. A shelf for two photo frames and a shelf for a row of books go up differently. Tell the handyman what will sit on it, because that decides the fixings and the spacing between them.

Why a shelf looks wrong a month later

• Holes were measured down from the ceiling. Ceilings are almost never straight. A level is.
• The hidden fixing went up roughly. The shelf slides onto its pins tightly, and any offset shows as a gap at the wall.
• Standard plugs in plasterboard. They hold at first, then the shelf starts tipping forward under load.
• Nobody checked for cables. Wires run straight up from sockets more often than people think.
• A laminated shelf was drilled without masking tape and the edge chipped.

Safety in one line: check the wall with a cable detector before drilling, especially above sockets and switches.

What to get ready

• Decide where the shelf goes, how high, and what it will hold.
• If you know what the wall is made of, put that in the job description.
• Clear space along the wall and cover furniture nearby.
• Keep the instructions and every part from the box.
