How an IKEA sink install works

IKEA sells sinks made for its own kitchen systems: inset sinks that rest on the worktop by the rim, and models sized for a particular cabinet width. So the first check is whether the sink and the cabinet underneath match. If everything came from one plan, they usually do.

At IKEA the tap, waste and trap are often sold separately from the sink. Before installation day, open the instructions and the parts list and compare them with what is actually in the boxes. A fitter cannot install what is not there, and a second trip for one missing nut helps nobody.

In a kitchen with a laminate worktop, the weakest point is at the sink. The cut chipboard edge must be sealed, and the sink rim bedded on a seal. Without that, water from every washed plate seeps into the board, and within a year the worktop swells around the sink.

The back panel of the sink cabinet needs openings for the pipes and waste. These are marked on site, from where the pipes actually leave the wall, not from the drawing in the manual.

If the new kitchen puts the sink where there was none before, that means moving water and waste pipes. Describe that separately in the order; it is a bigger job than a cut-out.

Common DIY mistakes

• Cutting without a template, or to a size found online.
• Leaving the worktop edge unsealed.
• Fitting the tap after the sink while lying in a cramped cabinet, rather than fixing it first.
• A trap assembled without a fall, or crooked, so the cabinet starts to smell.
• Forgetting the dishwasher and buying a trap with no branch.

Getting ready

• The worktop is fixed to the cabinets and the sink cabinet is empty.
• Sink, tap, waste and trap are nearby, with the instructions.
• Photograph the wall where the pipes come out and the worktop from above.
• Check there are valves to connect the tap to.

The water goes off before work begins, and the dishwasher’s electrics are for someone who knows electrics.

Finding a fitter

Describe the job in the app: IKEA sink, new kitchen, worktop material, dishwasher or not. Add photos. Tradespeople who fit kitchens and do plumbing in your area, Wola or elsewhere, send bids with their own price. You compare and choose, and then the fitter gets your number and address.

Payment goes to the fitter directly and they issue the invoice. The sink, tap, trap and sealant are paid for separately, as is clearing away boxes and rubbish. The fitter answers for their own cut-out and fixes their own mistake; crooked cabinets assembled by someone else are not on them.
