Siemens Dishwasher Connection in Warsaw: Built-In with a Panel

A dishwasher you don’t see

The order is usually this. Connections first: the inlet hose onto the cold valve under the sink, the drain with a loop under the worktop into a trap with a spigot, the plug into its own earthed socket in the next cabinet. Then the machine slides into the gap, and the tradesperson adjusts the feet so it sits level and at the same height as the cabinets around it.

Next comes fixing it in place. A built-in dishwasher gets screwed to the worktop or the sides of the neighbouring cabinets, otherwise it tips forward when the door is open. A steam protection strip often goes under the worktop as well, so the board doesn’t swell when the door is opened straight after a programme.

The panel comes last. The Siemens manual includes a template for drilling the panel, and the panel then hangs on the dishwasher door. With a heavy panel the door springs get adjusted so it doesn’t drop open by itself. The plinth is trimmed so the door clears it.

All of this takes longer than the catalogue picture suggests, so it helps to say in the order that it’s a full integration with a panel.

What usually goes wrong

• A panel hung a few millimetres off. In a row of cabinets it’s obvious.
• Not fixed to the worktop. The machine rocks every time you pull out a basket.
• Plinth left untrimmed. The door knocks it and a month later it’s scratched.
• Hose pinched while sliding the machine in. Programmes run long and the dishwasher throws a water supply error.

Before anyone comes

• Check the dishwasher panel is ready and matches the other fronts in size.
• Find the manual and the template from the box.
• Take photos of the gap, the trap and the socket.
• If the kitchen is still being fitted, ask for the gap to be left at the right width and for the valve under the sink to stay reachable.
