What wide boards change
Kahrs makes engineered wood flooring in Sweden: real wood on top, with layers beneath that stop the board warping. Most collections click together without glue, and some can also be glued to the screed. Which method your boards allow is in the instructions.
The longer and wider the plank, the stricter the base has to be. The fitter runs a long straightedge over the screed and looks for light underneath. Underlay takes care of small differences; dips and humps get levelling compound or grinding before a single board goes down. That stage often takes longer than the laying itself, and it is easy to underestimate in a bid.
Wood moves with the flat. In winter, when radiators dry the air, boards shrink slightly; in summer they swell. That is why a gap is left at the walls, and hairline gaps during the heating season are normal for real wood.
Sort out the doors as well. New boards on underlay raise the floor, so door frames are usually undercut for the plank to slide beneath. That leaves no gap to cover with a strip.

Why it creaks or opens up later
- The base was not levelled for long boards. The plank rests on a hump and rocks.
- Packs opened the day before laying. Boards need time to settle into the room, ideally still wrapped.
- Floor jammed against a wall or pipe. In summer it has nowhere to expand and lifts.
- A kitchen island or heavy wardrobe on a floating floor. It pins the boards.
- A fresh floor washed with a bucket of water. A damp, well-wrung mop is plenty.

- Choose the laying direction, usually along the light from the window.
- Buy boards with spare for cuts and pick skirting and thresholds at the same time.
- If the screed is new, do not rush the fitter: a dry base matters more than the date.
- Photograph the floor, the joins with other rooms and the bottom of the doors.
