What to know about Simon dimmers
Simon sells its switches and sockets in ranges, and Simon 54 is well known in Poland. The ranges include standard switches and dimmers, with mechanism and frame usually sold separately. If the room already has Simon sockets, pick a dimmer from the same range so colour and frame match.
With old incandescent bulbs, almost any dimmer worked. LEDs are different. The bulb itself has to be dimmable, which the packaging shows with a symbol or says in words. And the dimmer has to be suitable for LED, which its specs will state. If either is wrong, the light flickers, the bulb buzzes, or it never quite goes off.
There’s also a minimum load. Two or three efficient LED bulbs can add up to less than the dimmer is designed for, and then it behaves erratically even with the right bulbs. The maker gives the minimum load in the instructions, and the electrician can check it against your bulbs.
LED strips are trickier still. They run off a power supply, and an ordinary wall dimmer in front of it usually won’t work. Strips need a dimmable power supply or a separate controller. If the room has strip lighting, say so in the order, or the electrician will turn up with the wrong kit.
Where it usually goes wrong
- A dimmer on non-dimmable bulbs. The flicker starts on the first evening.
- A dimmer not rated for LED. The light jumps around at low brightness.
- Ignoring the minimum load. With one weak bulb the dimmer does what it likes.
- Mixed bulbs in one fitting. Some dim, others stay at full brightness.
Getting ready
- Photograph the switch and the box of the bulbs in the fitting.
- Count the bulbs in the light.
- If there’s strip lighting, photograph its power supply too.
- Decide whether to change the bulbs along with the switch: sometimes new bulbs are cheaper than fighting compatibility.
The swap happens only with the breaker off. A light switched off at the rocker doesn’t mean the box is dead.
