Which Velux blind goes where

Velux makes roof windows and a whole range of blinds for them. Blackout blinds shut out almost all light and run in side channels, so they are the bedroom choice. Pleated and light-filtering roller blinds give a soft light and suit a living room. Venetian blinds with tilting slats let you steer the light, away from a monitor in a study, for instance. Aluminium slats are easy to wipe, which is why people often put them in bathrooms and kitchens.

There are manual, electric and solar-powered versions. For a window you can’t reach, electric or solar is a lot more convenient.

Whatever the type, the blind is chosen by the window code on the data plate on the frame. The code decides whether the channels and brackets will fit. The size of the glass tells you nothing.

Where fitting goes wrong

• The blind was bought by glass size, not by window code.
• Brackets fitted in the wrong spots, so the blind runs at an angle.
• Venetian slats left unadjusted, closing unevenly and letting strips of light through.
• An electric model put on a window without suitable controls.
• Nobody tested it with the sash rotated, and the blind snags.

Getting ready

• Photograph the data plate on each window so the code is readable.
• Decide which blind goes in which room.
• Keep the instructions from the boxes.
• Clear the space under the windows.

If a motor has to be wired to the mains, that is a job for someone qualified in electrical work, with the circuit switched off.

If there are several windows, put them in one order so the fitter can price them together. Flag a window above the stairs or very high up, because it will need a ladder.

You pay the fitter directly and he issues the invoice. If a blind runs crooked after his fitting, he redoes it. Faults in the window itself are not on him. The blinds and taking away packaging are paid separately, fixings are usually included.
