How a Viega system is put together
Viega is a German maker of press-fit systems for water and heating: fittings and pipes in copper, stainless steel and multilayer plastic. The fitting slides over the pipe and is crimped with a press tool whose jaws match that particular system. There’s a sealing ring inside. Once pressed, the joint can’t be taken apart.
That’s the key point: you can’t tighten or repack a press fitting the way you would a thread. If it leaks, the plumber cuts it out with a bit of pipe and presses in a new one, usually with a short piece of pipe in between. That needs a press tool with the right jaws, so a spanner alone won’t do it, and it’s worth saying so in the order.
Viega also makes concealed cistern frames for wall-hung toilets, and floor drains. Leaks there usually come from the fill valve or the flush valve seal inside the cistern, and they’re reached through the opening behind the flush plate, without breaking into the wall.
It’s harder when the leaking fitting sits inside a wall. Someone has to open a hole to get at it. Ask in the bid whether the plumber will plaster it over afterwards or leave it ready for tiles or an access panel: those are two different jobs, and usually two different prices.
Common mistakes
- Wrapping the fitting in tape or smearing glue on it. The leak slows for a while, then comes back under the soggy tape a week later.
- A fitting that was never pressed during installation. Sometimes that only shows years later, when pressure in the riser jumps.
- Pressing with jaws from another system. The joint looks fine and doesn’t hold.
- Opening up the wall before finding out where the water is coming from. With a concealed cistern, most faults are fixed from the front.
Before you order
- Take a close-up photo of the fitting, ideally with the markings on it and on the pipe visible.
- If the leak is getting worse, shut off the water to the flat.
- For a cistern, photograph the flush plate and say whether water runs into the bowl constantly or onto the floor.
- Open the utility cupboard or access panel.
If water is dripping onto cables or a junction box, switch off that circuit before touching anything.
