Vikan: what kind of tool it is
Vikan is a Danish maker of professional cleaning tools: brushes, scrapers, squeegees, many of them colour-coded for different areas. Restaurant kitchens and food plants use them, and the range includes brushes for drains and pipes. The bristles are stiff and stand up to cleaning chemicals.
What that means at home: a brush does a good job on the gully grate, the cup underneath and the first few centimetres of the drain, where your hand won’t reach. As regular upkeep it works well. Sludge doesn’t get the chance to turn into a plug, and the smell goes.
A real blockage is another matter. If water is standing and the plug sits further down the pipe, you need a drain snake or the trap taken apart. Plumbers who take these jobs come with a snake, and a brush clean can be the last step once the plug is gone.
How often? Every couple of weeks, lift the grate, pull out the hair, brush the cup and the walls, and flush with hot water. It doesn’t take long, and the sludge never gets the chance to build up. In a flat where several people share the shower, do it more often.

Mistakes when cleaning a drain
- Forcing the brush deeper than it’s made to go. It can get stuck in the bend.
- Cleaning the gully without lifting out the water-seal cup. Dirt stays underneath and the smell comes back.
- Putting the gully back without the seal cup, or with it crooked. Sewer smell goes straight into the bathroom.
- Pouring chemicals in and going straight in with a brush. Corrosive splashes end up in your face.
- Waiting until the water stops draining altogether instead of cleaning a little and often.
Before the plumber comes
- Lift the gully grate and photograph what’s under it.
- Clear mats and bottles out of the shower.
- If you’ve poured in a drain product, photograph the label and don’t pour anything for a few hours before the visit.
- Check whether it’s only the shower, or the basin and bath too.
When using drain chemicals, wear gloves and glasses and keep a window open.
