What to know about Villeroy & Boch basins
Villeroy & Boch is a German ceramics maker with a long history. The range includes wall-hung, furniture, countertop and undercounter basins, often paired with vanity units from the same series. The ceramic is thick and heavy, so the wall and fixings have to take the weight.
Some basins, countertop bowls in particular, have no overflow. They need a waste without an overflow slot; a standard slotted waste will leak or simply won’t work. Check this before buying the trap and waste, because it’s a common mix-up.
Some models have an easy-clean glaze. Use a mild cleaner rather than scouring cream, or the surface dulls over time.

Mistakes that cost the most
- Bolts tightened all the way. Ceramic has no give and cracks, sometimes the first time someone leans on the rim.
- No washers between the porcelain and the nut.
- A slotted waste in a basin with no overflow.
- A basin hung out of level, so water sits in one corner and leaves limescale.
- An old, perished washer on the angle valve left under a brand new tap.
Before it goes on the wall
- Inspect the ceramic when it’s delivered. A chipped rim is the shop’s problem only until the basin is hung.
- Buy the tap, trap and waste to suit the model, ideally in one go.
- Find out what the wall is made of. Plasterboard needs a frame or different fixings.
- Photograph the spot and the height of the waste outlet.
Water is shut off at the valves, or at the flat’s main valve, before the old basin is disconnected.
