Locked Out or Door Won’t Open — How to Get Back In

Key left inside, the latch snapped shut, or the lock just refuses to turn. Before you reach for a crowbar, read this — there are several options that can save you money and avoid unnecessary damage.

Assess the situation: locked out or jammed?

These are two different problems. Locked out means the key is inside or you left without it and the spring latch engaged. Jammed means the key turns but the door will not open — a problem with the bolt, the door frame, or the mechanism itself. The solutions differ significantly.

First: check the obvious

  • Do you have a spare key? Call a family member, a neighbour, or the property owner.
  • Is the door only slightly stuck? Sometimes lifting the handle slightly while pushing firmly on the door is enough.
  • Is it a spring latch (not a deadbolt)? A stiff card slid along the door frame can sometimes push the latch back.

When to call a locksmith

No spare key, the card trick did not work, nobody is answering inside — it is time for a locksmith. A good locksmith opens the door without damaging the lock, using picking or a bypass tool. Ignore advice about forcing the door — that is a last resort and means replacing the door and the lock.

The cost depends on the time of day, the type of lock, and the location — check current rates through the contact form. We cover all of Warsaw, including districts like Ursynow and Mokotow.

What to do if the lock is damaged

If the lock has been misbehaving for a while — the bolt does not extend fully, the handle feels loose, the key gets stuck when turning — that is not a coincidence. A worn-out lock can fail completely at any moment. Replacing or repairing the mechanism costs far less than an emergency locksmith call at 11 pm.

How to avoid this in the future

  • Make one or two spare keys — leave them with someone you trust or with the building manager.
  • Never let the door snap shut behind you when you are without a key.
  • Check the lock once a year: does the key turn smoothly, is there any resistance?
  • If you have a high-security lock cylinder, make sure the locksmith is certified to work with it.

When a lock replacement is necessary

A broken lock, a change of tenants, a lost key — any of these is a good reason to replace the cylinder. A technician handles it in 20 to 30 minutes. To submit a request for a lock replacement or repair, use the contact form at the bottom of the page.
