Window washing

Window washing is priced per window, but windows vary a lot. A small kitchen window takes a few minutes, while a big balcony door with its frame, outside sill and glass splattered after facade work takes far more effort. So it is worth saying in the job which windows they are and what state they are in.

What washing a window includes

• cleaning the glass on both sides, streak-free;
• wiping dust and grime off frames, seals and hinges;
• cleaning inside sills and, where reachable, outside sills;
• for roof windows, rotating the sash and cleaning the outside pane from indoors.

Roller blinds, Venetian blinds, insect screens and net curtains are extras. If they need cleaning too, say so in the job.

Window cleaning after a renovation

After building work the glass is left with plaster dust, paint specks and silicone smears, and the frames often still have protective film nobody removed. That is a different job from a normal clean: paint and silicone come off with a glass scraper, carefully so as not to scratch it, and the film has to be peeled before the sun bakes it into the frame. Mention in the job that it is a post-renovation clean.

Safety and height

Windows that open inwards can be cleaned on both sides from inside the flat. Shop windows, fixed panes on upper floors and stairwell glazing need a lift or rope access, which is a separate work-at-height service.
