Hinge replacement: what the job involves
A cabinet hinge has cracked, the cup has torn out of the door or the door slams because the old hinge has no soft-close. Replacing furniture hinges means removing the worn hinge, choosing a new one with the same spacing and opening angle, and fitting and adjusting the door.
The price is per hinge. If the cup hole in the door is torn out, repairing it is added.
What replacement covers
- taking off the door and removing the old hinge;
- choosing a new hinge and mounting plate;
- fitting into the existing holes or drilling new ones;
- adjusting the door in three directions;
- checking the soft-close and gaps.
Choosing the hinge
What matters is the cup diameter, the opening angle and how the door sits on the carcass: full overlay, half overlay or inset. The easiest way is to take the old hinge to the shop or photograph it with the maker’s name. Corner units and lift-up doors need special hinges.
What to prepare
The number of hinges to replace and a photo of an old one. You can buy new hinges yourself or agree the model with the tradesperson. Empty the cabinets being worked on.
Common questions
Can soft-close be added to old hinges?
Yes, clip-on dampers exist. It is often simpler to fit a hinge with built-in soft-close.
What if the cup has torn out the board?
The hole is repaired with filler or a dowel, or the hinge is moved. With bad damage the door is replaced.
Is replacing the same as adjusting?
No. Adjusting sets a working hinge; replacing swaps a broken one for new.
