Floor threshold installation: what the job involves
Where the laminate in a room meets bathroom tiles or the hallway floor, there is a gap and often a step in height. A threshold strip covers that transition, protects the edges from chipping and lets the floor move. Fitting one means choosing the profile, cutting it to the door width and fixing it.
The price is per job. The number of strips and how they are fixed affect it.
What fitting covers
- measuring the doorway width and height difference;
- choosing a flat, step or transition profile;
- cutting it to length;
- fixing with plugs, a base rail or adhesive;
- checking the door opens freely over it.
Types of threshold
A flat strip joins two floors at the same height. A step profile takes up a few millimetres of difference, and an end profile finishes the laminate at a balcony door or stairs. Aluminium strips last well; wood and foil-wrapped ones match the floor colour better.
What to prepare
The number of doorways, their width and close-up photos showing the height difference. You can buy the strips or agree type and colour with the tradesperson. If there is underfloor heating, mention it, as drilling is then avoided.
Common questions
Can it be done without a threshold?
Floating laminate needs a gap. It can be covered with a low strip or cork filler in the floor colour.
What if the height difference is large?
Over a centimetre or so, special transition profiles are used or the base is levelled.
Should the strip be drilled into tiles?
Better not. It is usually fixed in the gap or bedded on adhesive.
