On top or underneath: the worktop decides
Blanco is a German brand with sinks in stainless steel and in a granite-based composite, and many models come in two versions, inset and undermount. An inset sink sits on the worktop by its rim and suits almost any surface. An undermount is fixed from below, which leaves the cut edge exposed.
That is why undermount sinks go into stone, quartz, compact laminate or solid wood sealed with oil or lacquer. Chipboard laminate with a bare edge around the bowl will swell sooner or later, however much sealant goes on.
A stone worktop for an undermount sink is usually cut and polished in the workshop that made it. On site, the fitter mounts the sink on its brackets with adhesive sealant and connects the waste. Find out in advance who is responsible for the cut-out, so it is not a question on installation day.
Blanco composite sinks often come with their own waste and overflow. Check it is in the box, and do not throw away the little bags of washers.

Where it goes wrong
- Ordering an undermount sink for a laminate worktop.
- Not telling the stonemason the exact sink model, so the cut-out is made for a “similar” one.
- Loading the bowl with dishes before the sealant has cured.
- A trap that hits the cabinet floor and blocks the drawer.

- Keep the sink, tap, waste and instructions nearby.
- Empty the sink cabinet.
- Photograph the worktop and the pipes.
The water goes off before work starts. If the valves under the sink do not hold, say so beforehand.

You pay the fitter directly and they issue the invoice. The sink, tap, waste kit and sealant are not part of the labour, and neither is taking the old sink away. The fitter answers for their own installation and redoes it if needed; a cut-out made by someone else, or the worktop itself, is not on them.
