Swapping to Alveus: where to start

Alveus is a Slovenian maker of kitchen sinks, with models in stainless steel and granite composite. For a swap, the material and colour matter less than three measurements: the old cut-out, the new sink’s rim, and the minimum cabinet width the maker gives for that model.

The new sink has to cover the old cut-out with some rim to spare. If the hole is bigger, nothing will hide it. If it is smaller, it gets widened with a jigsaw, and the fresh edge of the worktop must be sealed straight away or the chipboard starts drinking water.

Check the tap hole too. Some models have one ready, some have a knock-out to punch, and on some the tap sits on the worktop. If you are keeping the old tap, make sure it fits the new hole.

Something else nearly always turns up under an old sink: a cracked plastic trap, seized angle valves, a waste hose that does not quite reach the drain. It makes sense to put a new trap in the order from the start. It is cheap and saves a second visit.

What not to do

• Buying a sink from a photo without measuring the old cut-out.
• Fitting the new sink to the old trap “while it still works”.
• Leaving old dried sealant under the rim. New sealant will not bond to it.
• Forgetting the dishwasher. If there is one, you need a trap with a branch.
• Cranking the clips all the way. Composite does not like excess force.

Preparation

• Measure the old cut-out and photograph it with the tape measure in shot.
• Empty the sink cabinet completely.
• Keep the new sink, tap and trap, if bought, nearby.
• Find the valves under the sink and check that they close.

The water is shut off before work starts. If the valves do not hold, say so in advance.

Booking the swap

Describe what you are replacing in the app and add photos of the old sink from above and below. Tradespeople who do kitchen plumbing in your area, Wola or elsewhere, send bids with their own price. You pick one by price, rating and reviews, and only then do they get your number and address.

Payment goes straight to the fitter, and the invoice comes from them. The sink, trap, tap and sealant are paid for separately, as is taking the old sink away. The fitter will redo their own installation if something is wrong with it; the old worktop and old pipes are not on them.
