Clean it, fix it or replace it
Metal grease filters get washed; carbon filters get replaced. If the hood still pulls weakly after a wash, the culprit may be a long duct with bends or the grille it was connected to. In that case a new hood on the same duct will behave much the same. If the motor, the light or the control panel has failed and the hood is getting on in years, replacing it usually makes more sense than hunting for parts.

A Whirlpool hood inside a cabinet
Whirlpool makes chimney, under-cabinet and built-in hoods. The built-in type hides in a wall cabinet, with only a slide-out strip or panel on show. That means carpentry as well: a cutout in the cabinet floor for the hood body, and either a duct through the cabinet or room left for a carbon filter.
Whirlpool gives the cutout size and the minimum height above the hob in its installation manual. The cabinet has to hang securely, since the hood loads it from below. In older chipboard kitchens the cabinet floor sometimes needs reinforcing.
If the hood is ducted, the pipe should match the diameter of the hood outlet. A reducer to a smaller size chokes the airflow and the motor gets loud. A rigid, smooth-walled duct is quieter than cheap foil concertina, which also traps grease in every fold.
Power comes from an earthed socket, ideally inside the same cabinet. Wiring is only touched with the breaker off.
Typical slip-ups
- Cutout made to fit the old hood, while the new one has a different body.
- Duct run through the cabinet without sealing, so steam condenses inside the furniture.
- New hood fitted to the same long duct that was strangling the old one.
- Cabinet held by two screws in a soft wall, now with a hood hanging underneath.
Before anyone comes
- Wash or replace the filters in the old hood. The problem may go away.
- Empty the cabinet the hood will go into.
- Compare the cutout size in the Whirlpool manual with your cabinet.
- Photograph the old hood, the underside of the cabinet and the vent grille.
