Choosing a Fischer plug
Fischer has universal plugs such as DuoPower and UX that work across different materials, and the classic SX expansion plug for dense walls like concrete and solid brick. For plasterboard and other hollow walls there are separate plugs and metal cavity anchors that open up behind the board.
Universal doesn’t mean it suits everything. In soft aerated block or old plaster, even a good plug holds less than the box suggests. So the wall gets checked first: a test hole, the colour of the dust, how the bit feeds in.
Then two details where most failures start. The drill bit has to match the plug diameter exactly, or the plug spins. And the screw should be the length and gauge listed for that plug, so it expands properly.
What it costs and how to book: mirror hanging in Warsaw.
Common plug mistakes
- A concrete expansion plug in plasterboard. There’s nothing for it to grip, and the mirror comes out with it.
- A slightly bigger hole “so it goes in easier”. Then the plug turns in the hole.
- An overtightened screw. The plug tears or the wall crumbles around it.
- The bit hits rebar and the hole gets shifted a couple of millimetres. The new hole merges with the old one and nothing holds.
- A short plug under a heavy mirror, sitting only in the plaster.
Safety: before drilling, the wall is checked for cables and pipes, especially near sockets and in bathrooms.
Get these ready
- Find out what the item weighs. For a mirror it matters most.
- Mark the spot and the height.
- If you know what the wall is made of, put it in the job post.
- Cover the floor and furniture. Drilling into brick makes dust.
Booking the job
- In the app, describe what you’re hanging, what it weighs and what the wall is like. Add photos of the item and the wall.
- Handymen send offers with their own price and timing.
- You choose on price, rating and reviews. The handyman gets your phone and address after that.
- You pay the handyman directly and they issue the invoice. Standard fixings are included, special anchors may be charged separately.
Order in the app
Describe the job, add photos and the address. Tradespeople send their own prices and dates, and you pick one of the offers.
Open the appThe handyman answers for their own work and rehangs it if the mirror shifts because of the installation. Voids in the masonry and crumbling plaster aren’t on them, though they’ll usually point these out as soon as they see the wall.
